Introduction
We compare daily prices across 7 Dutch supermarkets. The price differences are significant: with our 4 standardised baskets (22-27 products each at 5+ supermarkets), splitting your shopping across just 2 stores saves 10-15%. Cherry-picking the cheapest store per product saves even more (16-21%).
What does "up to approx. 10-20%" mean?
The savings range depends on your shopping strategy. Here is what each scenario yields across our 4 A-brand baskets:
- 10-15% - splitting your shopping across the best 2 stores, compared to the average single store (incl. promotions)
- 16-21% - cherry-picking the cheapest store per product (theoretical maximum, incl. promotions)
- 22-27% - compared to always shopping at the most expensive store
- 7-11% - without promotions (structural price differences only)
A family (2+2) spends approx. € 146 per week on groceries (Nibud). By shopping at 2 stores you save 10-15%, or € 740 - 1.160 per year.

Statistical foundation: all comparable A-brand products
The ranges above are illustrated with curated example baskets. But the underlying data covers all 5.877 national brand products available at 3 or more supermarkets (the baskets above use a stricter 5+ threshold for reliability). Across this complete set:
- 9.7% - savings by always choosing the cheapest store per product vs the average store
- 15.3% - vs always shopping at the most expensive store

How we design shopping baskets
4 standardised baskets based on CBS consumer price index category weights. National brand products available at 5+ supermarkets. Max 30% product overlap between baskets. Prices include active promotions.
▶ Basket design and selection criteria
How are the baskets designed?
The composition is based on food spending data from the CBS Consumer Price Index 2024. The CBS publishes how Dutch households distribute their food spending across categories. We use these normalized weights (adding up to 100% of grocery spending) to determine basket composition:

Per category, we select the most widely available national brand product (available at 5+ supermarkets). Each basket contains 22-27 products, including household staples like toothpaste and detergent. Exact CBS weight distribution is not possible - the category allocation is indicative. Maximum 30% product overlap between baskets ensures each represents a genuinely distinct shopping pattern.
Why these 4 A-brand baskets?
- National brand reference basket: Follows CBS category weights most closely. 27 products across all food + household categories. Represents average Dutch household spending distribution.
- A-brand student basket: Budget basket for a single person or student. 23 products: quick meals, small portions, personal care. Nibud reference: approx. EUR 56/week.
- A-brand family basket: Family basket (2 adults, 2 children). 24 products with kid-friendly items, more snacks and drinks. Nibud reference: approx. EUR 146/week.
- A-brand basic needs: Pantry staples and household essentials. 22 products: shelf-stable food plus cleaning and personal care. Heavy on non-food items that every household buys regularly.
What is not included?
These A-brand baskets only include national brand products available at 5+ supermarkets. Fresh staple products like bread, potatoes, and bananas are primarily sold as store brands and cannot be compared as identical items across stores.
Aldi has limited coverage in these baskets (4-7 out of 22-27 products, 14-26%) because Aldi carries fewer national brands and focuses primarily on its own house brand assortment.
Lidl is not included as Lidl does not publish online product prices.

- Not every product type has a cheaper alternative. For products like basmati rice or sliced ham, the A-brand is often already the cheapest.
- Prices and promotions change weekly. For each individual product, you can view the price history on its product page.

- Prices include active promotions. Without promotions, savings are approximately 7-11%.
- Only national brand products available at 5+ retailers are included. House brand products (e.g. AH Huismerk) are excluded. Max 30% product overlap between baskets.
